About This Item
1843 hardcover as pictured. A handsome book, this is a guide for visitors to Paris as of 1843. It provides "a lively sketch of French manners and society, French politics, and French character, in every grade, from the king to the peasant; with and explanation of the principal occurences, connected with the different monuments of art in Paris....with a playfulness, impartiality, and keen satire, that is seldom equalled. Includes 18 engravings by various artists from designs by Eugene Lami. Binding is firm. Embossed green cloth boards with gold stamping are rubbed and lightly soiled with fading over spine. Edges show some wear with gently bumped corners and a dent in rear board at bottom. Owner's bookplate on FEP. Gilt edge of text block. Slight damage to fore edge of text block. Text itself is tanned at edges. Pages adjoining engravings are mottled as are the engravings but the text appears otherwise clean and unmarked. Several tissue guards over engravings are missing. No dust jacket. Your purchase helps support our small village library. s AR
