American Patriotism SABIN [24724] ADAMS 76-47b (not recording a copy complete with the 2 blank leaves at the end as here) First published in Shrewsbury in 1776.
Vindication SABIN 24726 ADAMS 76-49c ESTC t123969 First published in 1776.
Bible .. Sword Not in Adams but see ADAMS 76-48 for the first edition of 1776. ESTC t224574 This edition, apparently the second, is very rare (BL, Duke Univ., Library Co. of Philadelphia only in ESTC) and is here complete with the terminal blank leaf.
In the American Patriotism La Flechere (called Fletcher in England), a Swiss born Anglican vicar and friend of John and Charles Wesley, "takes issue against Evans and Price, and defends the right of Great Britain to tax the colonies" [Sabin], and in the Vindication he argues that that the doctrine of taxation maintained by Wesley "is rational, scriptural, and constitutional" while that of Evans "is highly unconstitutional, and draws after it a long train of absurd consequences". The Vindication was first published in 1776, with further editions in 1776 in both Dublin and London. The Bible and the Sword, written in Dec. 1776, takes Price's statement that the American colonists were fasting and praying while the English were "ridiculing them as fanatics and scoffing at religion [while] running wild after pleasure". Fletcher argues that were this the essence of the conflict the Americans would justifiably prevail, but that since this was not the nub of the issue, then Price's argument was both misleading and pernicious in that he sought "to persuade religious people that he was fighting the Lord's battles, and that opposing the king and the bishops, was only opposing tyranny and a profane hierarchy".
