About This Item
Dutton, 1981. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. Association copy, inscribed on the half-title page to the Stegners' immediate next door neighbors: "For Lucy and Otto, with all the best, Wallace Stegner, Los Altos Hills, May 21, 1992." Otto and Luciel (Lucy) Slater lived just over the Stegner's driveway fence, though their place was accessed via Byrd Lane not Three Forks Road. They had more in common than that, though, as Otto was from Utah originally like Stegner and returned often to his family's cabin. He worked for Lockheed in rocket development, but Stegner knew him best as a caretaker of their shared hill. From Otto's obituary: "His dear neighbor, the late Wallace Stegner, once said of him, 'Otto has a green thumb up to his elbow!'" A near fine book, folio in size, with sunning to top board edges and one bump to the top of front board; in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with the sunning/greening to spine that's usual for this title, but otherwise fine. // Wood (+) River (=) Books specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, and environmental literature, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions.
Synopsis
"This book is an attempt, by sampling, to say something about how the American people and the American land have interacted, how they have shaped one another; what patterns of life, with what chances of continuity, have arisen out of the confrontations between an unformed society and a virgin continent. Perhaps it is less a book about the American land than some ruminationsabout the making of America. . . . We are the unfinished product of a long becoming." —from American Places

About Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
