American lawyer John Jay (1817-1894) was active in the anti-slavery movement, elected president of the New York Young Men's Antislavery Society, and published several speeches and pamphlets on slavery. During his legal career, he defended numerous fugitive slaves in court and helped several gain freedom. He became one of the founders of the Republican Party in 1854. In 1869 President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him as US minister to Austria-Hungary where he served until 1875. This telegram was sent to William Cauldwell (1824 1907), publisher of the New York Sunday Mercury; Cauldwell was called the "Father of Sunday Journalism" and also served in the New York State Senate.
