London: Thames and Hudson,, 1985. First UK edition, first impression, signed and dated in 1988 by the photographer. In the American West was first published in the US earlier the same year, in conjunction with the exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. Seven years earlier, the museum had commissioned Avedon to photograph ordinary people living in the Western US. Between 1979 and 1984, Avedon made numerous trips through the region and photographed over 800 subjects, of which about 120 were included in the final exhibition. Folio. Original tan cloth lettered in black, mounted photographic portraits on each cover. With the original acetate dust jacket. Black and white photographs throughout. Trivial fingermarks to a few leaves; publisher's price sticker on rear panel of slightly marked jacket. Fine in near-fine jacket. Parr & Badger, vol. 2, p. 38.
