In the American West was a landmark in the career of New York photographer Richard Avedon and in the history of photography. It consisted of a series of larger-than-life black-and-white portraits of men and women living in rural America, posing in front of an immaculate white background and gazing intently at the camera. Against a stark white background, he photographed people living in rural areas and fresh from hard, industrial work. The result is a powerful portrait of the unromantic West-slaughterhouse workers, hardscrabble farmers, migrant farmworkers, coal miners, and even prisoners. With an essay by Laura Wilson at the back of the book. Not paginated, but approximately 180 pages plus one fold-out image. 11-1/4 by 14-1/4 inches. This is the hardcover issue; the book was issued simultaneously in paperback with a different cover design. First edition (first printing with no additional printings noted). A near fine, slightly spine-faded copy in a fine, unprinted acetate dust jacket.
