About This Item

McGraw-Hill:, 1973. 146 pages. "The question of amnesty for those young men who have either evaded the draft or deserted from the armed forces during the war in Vietnam is one of the most important issues confronting the American public. This book eloquently portrays the human dimension of the question. John David Herndon, a "self-retired Vietnam veteran, a 24 year-old high school dropout of Appalachian background, who went AWOL from the army in August 1970, made his way to Paris, and for early two years lived a precarious underground existence there that almost destroyed him. Then, in the Spring of 1972, John decided to come back openly to the United States under the sponsorship of Safe Return, a veterans' organization, to face the charge of in the military." This copy is inscribed by Mike Uhl. "He and Todd Ensign were the last remaining staff of CCI, citizens Commission of Inquiry. They saw that this was a chance to combine the amnesty and the war-crimes issues with a test case on desertion and exile. They went into long discussions and Dec. 1971, changed their organizational name to "Safe Return," a committee in support of self-retired veterans [deserters.] FINE HARDCOVER, FINE- DUST JACKET..
