About This Item
Paris: Didot L'Aîné,, 1782. A beautifully bound copy of this verse novel, the work of Jean-Claude Bozerian (1762-1840), "one of the leading, if not the leading Parisian binder of the period 1790 to 1810. His work was in great demand by leaders of the regime and prominent bibliophiles" (Knott, p. 86). First published in 1669, this edition of Les Amours de Psyché et Cupidon was published for le Comte d'Artois, later Charles X (1757-1836). It was part of his Collection d'ouvrages français, en vers et en prose, a series of 64 small volumes printed in limited press-runs between 1780 and 1784. Two volumes, duodecimo (130 x 76 mm). Early 19th-century blue straight-grain morocco by Bozerian signed in gilt at foot of flat spine of vol. I, spine compartments lettered and decorated with floral motif in gilt, foliate border to covers, turn-ins gilt, pink moiré silk endpapers, edges gilt. Wood-engraved arms of le Comte d'Artois to title page. Bookplate of one Robert de Billy (1894-1991) to verso of front free endpaper of vol. 1. Negligible rubbing, scattered foxing, else clean. A near-fine copy. David Knott, The Book Collector, Spring 2009.
