About This Item

London, Samuel Harding, 1739. Title printed in red and black. With 1 engr. folding map of Switzerland, and 5 engr. folding views. 6 unn. leaves, 290 pp. 8vo. Contemp. marbled calf, spine richly gilt with label (slightly rubbed). London, Samuel Harding, 1739. First edition. A fine, complete copy of this famous and rare "chronique scandaleuse" describing Swiss spas and the customs of their visitors, concentrating on Baden. D.-F. de Merveilleux (born 1748), a physician from Neuchâtel, was secretary and interpreter, representing the French court in Switzerland. His amusing work, written in the form of letters, contains quite acerbic anecdotes about well-known Bernese families. The engravings, in clear impressions, show Baden, Solothurn, Zug, Altdorf, and Pfäfers. - Reber 20; Wellcome IV, 120; Lonchamp 2024; Haller I, 1529; HBLS V, 86, 15. SCIENCE: MEDICINE / BALNEOLOGY ; yes ;
