[7], viii-xxii, [3], 2-632, [1], 2-10, [5] pp. Full contemporary sheep with the spine in five compartments and a red sheep label lettered in gilt; all edges lightly marbled. Illustrated with a frontispiece, a folding map, a few in-text engravings, and a plate. Publisher's advertisements on the endpapers and pastedowns. With english notes, critical and explanatory, a map arranged according to the latest and best authorities, and a plan of the Battle of Cunaxa. Xenophon's text in ancient Greek. Xenophon's history of the Greek alliance between ten thousand hoplites and Cyrus, the younger son of Darius II who aimed to usurp the throne from his brother, Artaxerxes II. These events would foreshadow the campaigns of Alexander the Great against the Persian empire. The translator, Charles Anthon, is best remembered for his work translating the Mormon Golden Plates. Moderate rubbing to the corners and one small split to the rear joint, leaves toned and foxed, common for American-made paper of this period. With a contemporary bookseller and stationer stamp of Portsmouth, VA on the free front endpaper.
