About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. On the lecture about Emotions and Will, the author discusses on his main project, ?that all psychic phenomena are formed out of senses and images. Emotions are described by psychologists as a distinct type mental occurrences. The author is concerned with the analysis of emotions. Emotions are complex and is necessary to know whether it has non-physiological material not deduced to sensations, images and their corresponding relationship.

In the analysis of emotions, the interesting subject is the physiological causation of emotions. It is apparent that the plight of the analysis is bound with the issue of the physiological causation. In the excerpts of James-Lange theory, James states the causation of emotions as ?Our natural way of thinking about these coarser emotions, grief, fear, rage, love, is that the cognitive understanding of some fact excites the mental affection called the emotion, and that this latter state of mind gives right to the bodily expression. Common sense says: we lose our fortune; are sorry and weep; we meet a bear, are frightened and run; we are insulted by a rival, are angry and strike . . . ? This is self-explanatory in character.

In relation with Will, there should be a Voluntary Movement, such as vital movements. There are movements called reflex and voluntary. When doing some exercises, it is a voluntary movement. The flowing of blood in our veins is involuntary, we cannot control or prevent it on our own. Eating is between the two, we choose not to eat on our own will or stop eating if we can.

The movements with kinaesthetic sensations have the tendency to occur by the images of those sensations and when we so caused are voluntary. Volition on the other hand is more than voluntary. It is the act of choosing or deciding on what to do or what not to do.

This is one of Russell?s perfected works and there are a number of essays about The Analysis of Mind.
