About This Item
London: Chapman and Hall, 1856. Book. Fair. Cloth. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. The full title reads "Analysis of Ornament - The characteristics of styles: an introduction to the study of the history of ornamental art; being an outline of a course of sixteen lectures on that subject, originally prepared for the government schools of design in the years 1848, 1849, 1850". Brown cloth with title in gilt on front cover and spine. Condition: Fair, covers are generally shelfworn with heavier wear to head and tail of spine. Previous owners bookplate on front endpaper. The title page also bears two previous owners names neatly written at the top, and an oval raised paper stamp stating Department of Science and Art with the word Reward in the centre with a crown above (possibly ex government library?). No other library marks. Many pages have neat pencil notes to the margins. Light smudging to some page edges. Remains of a thin dark green silk bookmark between pages 14 and 15, which has caused some corresponding browning to the inner edge of p.15. 112pp. Many b/w illustrations. There is a 2 in. vertical tear to the base of the folding b/w illustration facing p.105. Good reading copy. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
