Harold Dwight Lasswell (1902 - 1978) Studied At The University Of Chicago In The 1920S, And Was Highly Influenced By The Pragmatism Taught There. Freudian Philosophy, Which Informed Much Of His Analysis Of Propaganda And Communication In General. He Later Taught Political Science At The University Of Chicago (1922-38), Then Served At The Washington School Of Psychiatry (1938-39) And During World War Ii, Lasswell Held The Position Of Chief Of The Experimental Division For The Study Of War Time Communications At The Library Of Congress. He Analyzed Nazi Propaganda Films To Identify Mechanisms Of Persuasion Used To Secure The Acquiescence And Support Of The German Populace. At Yale University, He Became Professor Of Law, Professor Of Political Science, And Ford Foundation Professor Of Law And Social Sciences, Also A Professor Of Law At John Jay College Of The City University Of New York And At Temple University, Also A Visiting Lecturer At Campuses Throughout The World And Was A Consultant To Numerous U.S. Government Agencies. President Of The American Political Science Association, Of The American Society Of International Law And Of The World Academy Of Art And Science. He Authored More Than 30 Books And 250 Scholarly Articles On Diverse Subjects, Including International Relations, Psychoanalysis, And Legal Education. It Was Later Said "Few Would Question That He Was The Most Original And Productive Political Scientist Of His Time", A "One-Man University"." Lasswell's Work Was Important In The Post-World War Ii Development Of Behavioralism. His Studies On Propaganda Broadened Current Views On The Means And Stated Objectives That Could Be Achieved Through Propaganda To Include Not Only The Change Of Opinions But Also Change In Actions. His Five-Questions Model Of Communication Led To The Emphasis In Communication Study On Determining Effects. He Pioneered In Content Analysis Methods (Of Propaganda Messages And Newspaper Editorials, For Example). His Study Of Political And Wartime Propaganda Represented An Important Early Type Of Communication Study. Lasswell Integrated Freudian Theory With Political Analysis, As In His Psychoanalytic Study Of Political Leaders, And Utilized Intra-Individual Freudian Theory At The Societal Level. He Helped Create The Policy Sciences, An Interdisciplinary Movement To Integrate Social Science Knowledge With Public Action. William Burnett Benton (1900 - 1973) Graduated From Yale In 1918, Then Began Work For Advertising Agencies Until 1929, After Which He Co-Founded Benton & Bowles With Chester Bowles In New York. He Served As The Part-Time Vice President Of The University Of Chicago From 1937 To 1945. He Was Appointed Assistant Secretary Of State For Public Affairs And Held The Position From August 31, 1945 To September 30, 1947, During Which Time He Was Active In Organizing The United Nations. He Was Appointed To The United States Senate On 17 December 1949 By His Old Partner Chester Bowles (Who Had Been Elected Governor In 1948. In The November 1950 Election, He Defeated Republican Party Candidate Prescott Sheldon Bush, Father Of U.S. President George Herbert Walker Bush And Grandfather Of U.S. President George W. Bush. In 1951 He Introduced A Resolution To Expel Joseph Mccarthy From The Senate. Benton Lost In The General Election In 1952 To William A. Purtell. Benton's Comeback Bid Failed In 1958 When, Running Against Bowles And Thomas Dodd He Failed To Win The Democratic Nomination For The U.S. Senate. He Was Later Appointed United States Ambassador To Unesco And Served From 1963 To 1968. For Much Of His Life, From 1943 To His Death, He Was Chairman Of The Board And Publisher Of The Encyclopædia Britannica, Was A Member Of And Delegate To Numerous United Nations And International Organizations.
