London: Author and printed by J. Purser , 1766. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine. Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. STUBBS George. First edition, First issue, 1766, 24 fine engraved plates In re-backed contemporary half calf over blue marbled boards, some blind tooling, edges bumped & worn. Spine with gilt tooling, plus gilt titles to the original calf label. Internally, title & reader leaves followed by 24 fine engraved plates, all washed, depicting 36 horses, accompanied by 47 printed pages (some light browning), lacking the errata slip, a few leaves with 1 or 2 tiny pin holes to margins, 'To the Reader' and final leaf with repaired tears to verso, small ink stamp to title and one other text leaf, a couple of other minor professional repairs, marbled endpapers, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box. (560*444 mm). (Huth p42; ESTC T147211; Garrison and Morton 308.1; Lennox-Boyd Stubbs, pp. 165-188; Mellon Books on the Horse and Horsemanship 57; Nissen ZBI 4027). A very good copy of this landmark work on equine anatomy. This copy in the first issue, without watermarks and on laid paper. The artist, previously renowned as a portrait painter, became synonymous with depicting horses after this work was published. It highlighted his supreme draughtsmanship & observational talents. Provenance: Royal Veterinary College (ink library stamp). This copy came from the private collection of the late book dealer and collector, Norman Comben, who was permitted to purchase a few duplicate copies from the RVC library in return for a detailed cataloguing of their collection many years ago; Dr Niall Kenny (small circular bookplate).

However this does not mean that automatically goods are sent out on approval. Any return is entirely the responsibility of the returnee, and the Post Office is the preferred carrier. Our bank account details can be supplied to purchasers. Mastercard, Visa, Solo & Maestro can be accepted for most transactions. Checks are welcome, but please allow 4 working days for them to clear, before we send the book. Payment can be accepted in currencies other than Sterling but please ask beforehand to agree. There are no export restrictions.
CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS You may request to cancel a book order or return a book within 14 days of receipt of the book. A book may be returned for one of the following reasons: Item damaged: The item was damaged during shipping. Item not as described: The condition of the book does not match the description on Madoc Books. Incorrect item delivered: The title, cover or edition of the book is different than the title on the order. Item not received: The estimated delivery date has passed and the book has still not arrived. To cancel a book order or return a book simply contact Madoc with your order confirmation details and to obtain the return address.
DELIVERY DETAILS We ship all of our orders via Royal Mail. Orders are usually shipped within 2 or 3 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 2.2 LB, or 1 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized or a multiple in books we will contact you to let you know that extra shipping is required. Insurance costs are usually dictated by the shippers, should they be higher than normal, then we will contact you for your acceptance.
