First Edition! John Cunningham Saunders (1773-1810) - "Born in Devonshire. Saunders began his surgical training when he was seventeen years old. In 1795, he moved to London to study under Astley Cooper at St. Thomas Hospital, where he was appointed as a demonstrator in anatomy. In 1805 he opened The London Dispensary for Curing Diseases of the Eye and the Ear. Very quickly, he limited his activity to ophthalmology and became famous for his cataract operations. He died very young of a brain disease. In 1806, he published The Anatomy of the Human Ear, dedicated to Astley Cooper. "It is a brief, but scientific treatise, and far beyond its predecessors.
