About This Item
Hardcover, Boston, circa 1876. Likely second edition (see notes below). Condition is Good: original cloth boards show moderate general wear, some fraying to corners and spine ends. Binding is functional, book lays open. No interior writing of any kind. A few smudges and some foxing is present. Paginates: blanks, frontis, 548, [6], blanks, 28 unpaginated plates including frontis and half title. Measures 8.5 x 6.25 inches. Author traveled through Territory 1858-1860. The plates, personal anecdotes and observations are major attractions of this book. He was fortunate to meet and befriend Cochise early in his travels. See Howes C843; Rader 950; Graff 898. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Although not stated this is likely second edition. Has copyright date of 1876, ads are for books published in 1877 or earlier. The text is identical to the 1873 first edition through page 527. The additional material elaborates on the Apache / US conflict and gives an account of formation of the Arizona Territory. More Notes: book offers observations of a common man not those of a soldier, academic or scientist. Many of his stories are anecdotes of his individual adventures which run from humorous to tragic. I have listed the 1875 UK as well.
