About This Item

St. Louis: Medical Science Press, 1910. First edition. Folio. Frontispiece portrait of Vesalius, xvii, [1, another portrait], 149, [1] pp. Dozens of textual illustrations. Untrimmed in publisher's crushed brown morocco over marbled boards, blind-stamped title and compartment devices on spine. Some rubbing to spine and tips, previous owners name, else a very clean and tight copy. Physician and scholar James Moores Ball (1862-1929) was an avid bibliophile and eminent member of the St. Louis Medical Society. Ball received his medical degree from Iowa State University in 1884, taking further post-graduate courses in New York and Europe. He served as professor of Ophthalmology at the St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1894 to 1910, then served as dean and professor of Ophthalmology at the American Medical College. Ball was a prolific author in both the fields of medicine and history. His three monographs truly reflect his scholarly and scientific interests: Andreas Vesalius, the reformer of anatomy (1910), Modern ophthalmology (six editions between 1904 and 1927), and a study of the practice of body snatching, The Sack-em’ Up Men (1928). He gave his extensive library the the Medical Society of St. Louis who, in 1989, gave it to the Bernard Becker Medical Library at Washington University in St. Louis.
