About This Item
This is a two volume set of the first books in Coventry Patmore's The Angel in the House, The Espousals and The Betrothal. Better known than the later volumes, in these volumes Patmore espouses in verse his conception of the ideal Victorian woman, based off of his first wife. The work provides fascinating insight into ideas of gender roles and relationships between men and women in the Victorian Age.
This edition of The Espousals was published in 1856 and The Betrothal in 1857. Both volumes are in Fair condition, with significant wear to the cloth covering the boards. There is also significant bumping to the corners. There are long stretches along the edges of the covers where the fabric has worn away entirely, and there is some discolouration to the fabric on the covers. However, they still present and attractive embossed design on both the front and back covers. The Espousals appears to have possibly had a page cut from the very front, but fly leaves and the title page are still present. Both volumes have an inscription from the Reverend M.S. Lehigh Mabery, one addressed to Eva and the other to George.
