About This Item

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1963. First U.S. edition. Hardcover, octavo, embossed brown cloth boards, gilt spine titles, pictorial dust jacket, publisher's black top stain, 132 pp. Very good book, cloth corners and edges lightly worn; very good dust jacket, chipped spine ends lightly worn and creased, joints rubbed, lower cover top edge creased with 1" tear, lower cover top corner torn 1/4", edges and corners to covers lightly worn. The epic poem of a generational spaceship making an escape from earthly cataclysm only to avoid a tragic crash with space trash forcing the vessel on a new uncharted path of existential dilemmas. Martinson won the Nobel prize for literature in 1974. And by 1960 Aniara was adapted into a two act opera by Karl-Birger Blomdahl and libretto by Erik Lindegren. Adapted from the Swedish by Hugh MacDiarmid and Elspeth Harley Schubert. Introduction by Dr. Tord Hall.
