About This Item
New York: T. Y. Crowell & Co, [n.d., but ca 1893]. First Edition. A later issue of the first English-language edition. Octavo (19cm). In publisher's tan paper wraps, printed in black; [ii], [i]-viii, [5]-773, [5]pp; one-page publisher's ad at front, 4pp at rear, and ads to verso of front cover, recto and verso of rear cover. A sound copy, rubbed, cover with general moderate wear and soiling, rear wrapper detached but present, minor losses to front lower corner, head, and tail, internally lightly browned: Very Good.
A late issue of the first English translation, in scarce original paper wrappers. The setting appears to be identical to the first printing, with the Crowell imprint on the title page, but this copy lacks the Rand Avery imprint on the copyright page. Translations of Tolstoy's other works listed in the ads date the issue to at least 1889. The publisher's address on the ads and wrappers (46 E. 14th St) dates it even later, to between 1893 and 1900. However, we find no auction records for any other copy in paper wraps. LINE, ETTLINGER & GLADSTONE Tolstoi 39.
