Housed in Beer's tan paper folder with "Urey" in ink on the cover. Just a little creasing to some pieces. Excellent condition. An archive of correspondence between astronomer Arthur Beer and Nobel Prize winning chemist Harold Urey regarding the latter's contribution to Vistas in Astronomy. Beer (1900-1980) was born in Richenberg, Bohemia (later Czechoslovakia), and educated in Austria and Germany. He worked as an astronomer at Breslau University, where he studied binary stars, and at the German Maritime Observatory. He also wrote newspaper columns and was responsible for developing one of the first scientific radio programmes, Aus Natur und Technik. Beer escaped from Germany in 1934, assisted by Einstein, who wrote him a public letter of recommendation, and spent the rest of his life in the UK. He worked at the Cambridge Solar Physics… Read More

London:: John Senex, 1728., 1728. 8vo. iv, 187, [1] pp. 4 folding plates, decorative headpieces. Original gilt-stamped calf, modern red leather gilt-stamped spine label, raised bands; rubbed, joints cracked, upper spine mended. Ownership stamp of "P.G." Very good. Rare. First edition in English; first printed in Leiden in 1727, as Matheseos universalis elementa. "This work, translated into Dutch (1728) and English (1752 [sic]), is of didactic rather than original merit, but it was significant for its invitation to mathematicians to elucidate systematically Newton's Universal Arithmetick, which 'sGravesande exemplified by his own explanation of two passages from Newton's book. 'sGravesande found the lighthearted treatment of infinitesimals and the infinite in Bernard de Fontenelle's Elemens de la geometrie de l'infini (Paris, 1727) unacceptable, and he maintained his objections in the Journal litteraire against Fontenelle's rejoinder (1730)." – DSB V, p. 510. Description:
The automata were created between 1768 and 1774 by Pierre Jaquet-Droz (1721-1790), his son Henri-Louis and Jean-Frédéric Leschot, and at the time of the publication owned and exhibited by the French showman Auguste Bullot. The book contains a detailed description of the three life-like automaton dolls and the automaton grotto. 1. The musician, a female organ player. The music is not recorded or played by a musical box. The doll plays a genuine, custom-built instrument by pressing the keys with her fingers. Movements of her chest show her "breathing", and she follows her fingers with her head and eyes. The automaton also makes some of the movements that a real player would do, such as balancing the torso. 2. The draughtsman, a young boy. He is capable of drawing four different images: a portrait of Louis XV, a royal couple (believed to be Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI), a dog with "Mon toutou" ("my doggy") written beside it, and a scene with a cupid driving a chariot pulled by a butterfly. Cape Town: Howard Timmins for George Allen & Unwin Ltd. Undated work, probably early 1950's. Inscription to previous owner in green felt-tip on flyleaf. Rosenthal said in the foreword: "This book is a monument to that lively and unhonoured fraternity of South Africans I knew as a boy, the prospectors who searched for gold and other mineral wealth -- often without success but never without a dazzling optimism. Others made the millions; they had the fun. From them and from the lips of the accompanying band of inventors, detectives, magnates and stock-brokers heard the yarns that, in most cases, are here set down for the first time. My thanks go out to those few veterans who survive and to the relatives of others who have passed on, for furnishing me with many of the unique portraits and other illustrations which help to embellish these pages." ------------------ Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
