New York: M.S. Mill Co., Inc, 1947. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (19.75cm); red cloth, with titling and decorations stamped in black on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [viii],214,[2]pp. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "To Dr. Gregory L. Paine / with the sincere regard of the author / Hugh Holman / March 1, 1947." Light wear to spine ends, two strips of old tape residue to two edges of rear pastedown; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $2.50), lightly edgeworn, spine-sunned, with a few tiny tears, and some offsetting to upper edge of rear flap; Very Good+. The fifth of six detective novels by Holman (1914-1981), five of which feature his central character Sheriff Macready of fictional Hart County, South Carolina. HUBIN, p.209.
