Beattie, a former instructor at Harvard, the University of Connecticut, and the University of Virginia, and recipient of awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, was once heralded as the voice of a generation. "I can't help it," she told the PARIS REVIEW in 1983, "if people make the mistake of thinking that I am a prophet and that I am disguising my wisdom as short fiction that's published in THE NEW YORKER."
