About This Item

Stuttgart und Tubingen: J. G. Cotta'scher Verlag, 1849. In two volumes. xviii, 362; [4], 407pp, [1]. Bound by Leighton of London in contemporary gilt-tooled calf, contrasting red and green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges. A trifle rubbed and marked. Marbled endpapers, pencilled shelf-marks to FFEPs, very occasional light spotting. A handsomely bound copy of a mid-eighteenth century edition of German polymath Alexander von Humboldt's (1769-1859) highly influential natural history essays based on observations on the flora, fauna, and climate of Venezuela, Peru, and Mexico. From the library of Exbury House, Hampshire, recently dispersed (without any indication of such). Exbury House was acquired by Banker and politician Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (1882-1942) in 1919 and remains in the family to this day. Many of the books in the library were inherited from Alfred de Rothschild (1842-1918) of Halton Estate, notably considered one of greatest art collectors of his day. . 8vo.

Terms of Sale

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
