"Maria has labored hard, I believe, almost five years, against my licentious life and doctrines, and without proving one just charge against me of immorality; and, on the other hand, she has not produced one person to bear witness, before the churches, of any one good work--either work of the Law, work of faith, or work of the hands--that ever she performed, but one; and that was cooking the calf's-head, the night that the synod was convened against me, and she threw that into the ashes. . . . It was deemed no less than a miracle that Maria was not drowned in the pottage-pot; but some of the opposite party view it as a bad omen to them, that their councils and their religious profession would as surely fall to the ground, as the Calf's-head fell into the ashes."

A characteristic controversial tract from "the coalheaver prophet," offered for sale at the venues where he preached, a point-by-point ad mulierem attack against Baptist Maria de Fleury (and by extension her intimate friend John Ryland). See the DNB for a summary of Huntington's eccentric career. Contemporary ink autograph addition to the imprint, "and [sold] by T. Barston, Granthorn, Linc're.
