About This Item

London : Andrew Melrose , 1913 . First Edition . Very Good . 8VO . A very personal memoir of Shackleton's 1907 Nimrod expedition to the Antarctic. Murray was a biologist and manager of the expedition's base camp. He later died while serving on the Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913-1914. Marston was the expedition artist. Reminscences (not always positive), often humourous, of the expedition and personnel. Extensively and somewhat eccentrically illustrated with photographs and drawings by both men. One plate, The Antarctic land - A Peaceful Night is missing. Chapter on Chanties with music at the rear. In original blue cloth. Sporadic foxing, corners worn, spine faded. Gift inscription dated 1913 to Dr J Craik Taylor from DSS. An important Antarctic record with a very different viewpoint from the official histories. Uncommon.
