Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1899. First American edition. Hardcover. Good + overall. Verne was a fan of the writings of E.A. Poe and wrote this novel as a sequel to Poe's "The Narrative of A. Gordon Pym", which was published in 1838. First published in English in 1898. While the English edition is dated 1898, and presumed to precede, this copy has a pencil gift inscription dated '"Melly Christmas 1898" (sic).
8vo, frontispiece, 336pp, 17pp b&w illustrations. Original green cloth stamped in silver & black, a damp mark lower right quadrant of the front board, a small ink spot at the spine.

Synopsis
An Antarctic Mystery, also known also as The Sphinx of the Ice Fields, is an 1897, two-volume novel by Jules Verne and is a sequel to Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket which was published in 1838. It follows the adventures of the narrator and his journey from the Kerguelen Islands onboard the Halbrane.
