About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf , 1982. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/Fine. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Here brought together for the first time, is the greatest work of one of America's great graphic artists- a splendid, definitive selection of his wood engravings, lithographs, paintings, book illustrations, designs, and autobiographical writings through the decades". Rockwell Kent, an artist of overflowing versatility and vitality. His early work anticipated Art Deco by almost twenty years. His influence in the 1930's and 1940's was everywhere: on book jackets, in advertisements, on the walls of government buildings. He was, simply, one of the most famous artists of his time. he eloquently resisted McCarthyism and became one of its most public victims, His life, as he himself documented it is a fascination. This fabulous collection includes 110 of his paintings, 90 of which are reproduced in full color many for the first time. Additionally there are hundreds of photographs, black and white drawings and paintings. There are a number of telling letter to among others Jamie Wyeth, Angie Dickerson, The House on Un-American Activities Committee, letters to several editors. There is a tipped in study of Helena which should have been printed on page 303 but was mistakenly omitted. The book is edited by Fridolf Johnson with a remarkable forward by Jamie Wyeth which he wrote at Kent House on Monhegan Island, Kent's home for many years. The book is flawless and would be unread, except while I was writing this description I was moved to look through and study the entire book, a pleasure which took several days. The binding is fine brown paper over boards with a wonderful print centered on the cover which is quarter bound in gray cloth. The fine lettering on the spine is blocked in gilt. Jacket is very fine + and Unclipped $(60.00), with a very powerful drawing of Moby Dick on the front. An amazing and very collectible book. There may be extra shipping charges if shipped out of the country. The book is large and heavy.
