About This Item

Leipzig: Ethnologischer Verlag, 1910. ltd ed. Cloth spine and gilt-stamped boards. Signatures mostly unopened; some spotting to ads in back matter. Rubbing to extremities and some scuffs to boards. Shaken. Else very good.. 539pp., including ads + xix plates. Illust. from drawings and black and white photos. Text in German. Yearbook of folklore, sociology, and sexual customs from around the world edited and privately published by Krauss who was a specialist in the ethnology of the South Slavic peoples. This is the seventh volume of an annual that lasted ten volumes. "Throughout his career Krauss was harassed by the law, which took a dim view of the value of his researches into sexual customs and practices. But despite his own difficulties in this direction, he was quick to rise to the defense and aid of others similarly persecuted. When the author, Karl Vanselow, was tried, in 1909, on charges of circulating and selling obscene writings and pictures (a set of the ANTHROPOPHYTEIA had been found and seized in his office), Krauss appeared before the court to prove that the publication was a work of scientific value. His argument was bolstered by an exchange of correspondence with Sigmund Freud, who emphasized the great value of erotic folklore in the study of human psychology. Vanselow was acquitted and released. Krauss printed a full report of the trial, including the correspondence with Freud, as a long appendix to this volume, which otherwise contains the customary distribution of articles... Amrain followed up his fifth volume article on the American Negro with another, this on racial breeding. It is interesting to note, too, that with this volume Freud is added to the editorial board on the title page." - from Hoffman, Selected Bibliography, page 109.
