About This Item

Satirical political poster issued to coincide with the documenta 5, held in 1972 in Kassel. The contemporary art fair's theme during the 1972 iteration revolved around the concepts of "Depiction" and "Reality" ("Abbildung" and "Wirklichkeit"), which are here being subverted in reference to the horrors perpetrated in Vietnam by the US. The fair's official title was "Questioning Reality - Pictorial worlds today" ("Befragung der Realität - Bildwelten heute"). Curated by Harald Szeemann, it is considered to have been the most important exhibition of contemporary art after World War II. In contrast to documenta 4, the show also included numerous happenings and fluxus events. The silk-screened poster has been partially painted over, possibly alluding to dollar signs. The artist's or publisher's name to the lower right corner has been obscured by the paint.

We were unable to find further information about the poster, and as of February 2024, it could not be traced via KVK or OCLC.
