Paris, 1803. Proof before lettering. Etching. Good+. c.1786/1803 Etching and engraving on heavyweight laid paper (faint watermarks indecipherable). Image measurements: 19.5 cm x 15.5 cm. Sheet Size: 32.3 cm. x 25 cm.. Artist proof before lettering, lacking "'De la Galerie du Palais Royal', 'Ecole vénitienne', 'IIIe tableau de Jean Antoine Regillo / dit Pordenon', size of original paintings, and seven lines of French description" as seen on British Museum's print. The lettering that is present includes production details: 'Peint par J. A. Regillo - Dessiné par Wicar - Gravé par Ketterlinus', and title: JUDITH ET HOLOFERNE (sic.). From the series: Galerie du Palais Royal. Description: Judith, seen half-length, holding a knife in her left hand and the head of Holofernes in the other, turns towards her servant, who stands on the left. Print Condition: heavy foxing to margins, though image not visibly affected; superficial creasings to margins, mounting tape attached to left side verso. Good-Very Good. From the British Museum: Object: Judith et Holofernoes. Series: Series: Galerie du Palais Royal. Description: Judith, seen half-length, holding a knife in her left hand and the head of Holofernes in the other, turns towards her servant, who stands on the left; after a painting attributed on plate to Pordenone; Painting not described in Cohen's catalogue. NOTE: The attribution of painting to "Pordenone" is present on the BM print but not on this "proof before lettering" that we offer here.
