About This Item

xiv+190 pages with figures, charts, maps and appendices. Small quarto (10 1/2" x 7 3/4") bound in original publisher's green wrappers. Middle American Research Institute Publication number 43. First edition.

The 1969-71 National Geographic society-Tulane University project was organized specifically to deal with two problems. The first concerned the precise definition of the Rio Bec architectural style and its proper chronological placement. The second involved the determination of the chronological and cultural relationships existing among the Rio Bec, Chenes and Puuc sub-regions. Several secondary results were expected as well. These included the construction of an independent chronological framework for the Rio Bec zone; the establishment of a firm chronological and typological bridge between the isolated culture sequences of northwestern Yucatan and the southern Maya lowlands; and the dating of the massive defensive network at Becan, suspected to be of either Late or Terminal Classic age. Central to the solution of any of these problems was the establishment of a local ceramic sequence for the Rio Bec sub-region.
