About This Item

320 pages with photographs, maps, figures, glossary, bibliography and index. Quarto (10" x 7 1/2") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Basil Greenhill, the director of the National Maritime Museum, has done more than write a new introductory handbook on the history of boats and boatbuilding. He firmly establishes his book on the dual bases of archaeology an maritime ethnology. The archaeological study of boats has changed character since the excavation in the 1960's of five ships from about AD 1000 in Roskilde Fiord. Greenhill has divided the book into three parts. First covers the general categories used in describing wooden boat construction. Second part is to bark boats and dugouts. The second half is devoted to part three, a description of the evolution of European ship design from antiquity to the 16th century. Condition: Damp stain to heal of front cover, front heal corner rubbed. Jacket price clipped, spine sunned else about very good in a very good jacket.
