About This Item
HOUSE DESIGNS FOR ALL CLASSES ON SCOTTISH ESTATES
first edition 4to. [6 (half-title, title & dedication)], [6 (preface)], [50 (index & description of plates)] leaves (all printed on recto side only), 100 numbered plates including tinted views and plans, original blue cloth over bevelled boards, large gilt title panel on front board, spine gilt lettered, binding trifle marked and slightly scuffed at corners, else a very good clean copy.
Starforth (1822-1898), English-born architect and architectural author, was apprenticed to a Scottish architect as a youth and remained there for the rest of his life.
He set up an independent practice around 1850, specialising in churches, and country villas, and farmstead and his many significant buildings are located mainly in Lothian, Dumfries & Galloway, and the Scottish Borders. The tinted frontispiece view is of Drumlanrig Castle, seat of Duke of Buccleuch, so it may be that some of the other buildings shown here such as entrance lodges and gates, workmen's houses, gamekeeper's house, land-agent's house, etc, were designed for the duke.
