About This Item

Philadelphia: Childs and Peterson, 1857. A very good set, spines light faded, some wear at extremities, some foxing. 2 volumes. 8vo. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard. Profusely illustrated (300 engravings including 22 plates); 2 folding maps. Original cloth (varying colors), gilt-lettered on spine. Provenance: Augustus Seward (signature on title), presumably the career Army officer (1826-1876), son of William H. Seward and Adeline Seward. Second edition of volume one, FIRST EDITION of volume two. While Franklin was never found, Kent and his explorers were able to gather a great deal of information regarding indigenous people, local geography and natural history of the Arctic region. The discoveries found on the voyage chronicled include the Humboldt Glacier, Kennedy Channel, the Kane Basin. Kane's explorations were the farthest north thus far. Sabin 37001.
