About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1852. 1st Amer. ed. Hardcover. woodcuts and diagrams. pp. xi, 516, ads [6]. Small 8vo. Embossed black cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Tables and in-text engravings. This version published without the plates and map of the earlier UK first edition. Spine and corners inexpertly laminated, presumably to mitigate further loss to spine ends, corners and joints. Adhesive residue to front endpapers, contents show foxing, but are otherwise unmarked and in good condition. The first edition was published in London by Longman in 1851. This edition contains the journal of Richardson's and Dr. John Rae's expedition in 1848 down the Mackenzie River and along the coast to the Coppermine River, returning overland to Fort Confidence (Arctic Bibliography #14489). Also included is an "Eskimo Vocabulary". Richardson was attempting to collect evidence of the fate of Sir John Franklin and his crew, while conducting numerous scientific observations.
