About This Item

New York: Greenwillow Books, 1976. Fine in fine jacket.. Inscribed first edition of the classic '70s YA novel about a sensitive adolescent exploring her own identity and her family's history, published the year after Hamilton became the first Black author to be awarded the Newbery Medal. ARILLA, about an interracial family and especially young Arilla's place in it, conveys a theme found in many of her best books, that of African American girls coming to embrace their true selves. A stellar copy. 8'' x 5.5''. Original quarter yellow cloth with gilt-stamped yellow boards. In original unclipped ($7.95) pictorial dust jacket by James McMullan. 248, [2] pages. Inscribed by Hamilton on title page: "To Mark Taylor - For the inexplicable in us all - Sincerely, Virginia Hamilton / San Francisco '77." Slight edgewear.
