About This Item

Oxonii [= Oxford]: E Typographeo Academico [= University Press], 1833. Later edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [3], 2-239, [1] pp. Contemporary half calf over blue cloth with the spine in six compartments, black morocco label lettered in gold on the spine, spine with gilt decorations; all edges decoratively speckled. Preface and title page in Latin, text in Greek. Published by the Oxford University Press specifically for use in the college classroom. It appears that this edition was issued with several blank leaves on which the student using the book could take notes. Our copy has copious manuscript notes from the late 1830's on these pages. The student signed his name on the free front endpaper: James Glencross, Balliol College, 1837. Balliol college was a powerhouse of Greek and Latin language learning, with Benjamin Jowett having taught there. This is a fascinating example of nineteenth century ancient language education, with copious evidence of how a student would interact with an Aristotelian text. Some rubbing to the extremities and the rear hinge starting a bit, but binding is secure and firm.
