About This Item

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1879., 1879. First edition. First edition. Original red cloth, with gilt and black-stamping to spine and front cover. Blind-stamping to rear cover. 254pp. + 2 pages of advertisements. In Addition: The second edition of this same work. It's point of difference is that it is illustrated with 12 Plates...4 by Frederic Remington. It's bound in dark green cloth with "INDIAN FIGHTS Illustrated 1887" in gilt on front cover and on spine. A very scarce and interesting work. Decker 44:152: "A very elusive little book with probably the best and most accurate appraisal of the Indian fights and fighters on the American frontier." Graff 1458: "Contains chapters on the Fetterman Massacre, Forsyth's fight, the Grattan Massacre, and the Canby Massacre, etc." Other chapters discuss the experiences of Col. Guy V. Henry, the death of Capt. Gunnison in Utah, encounters with Apaches, the treachery of the Modocs, a voyage to Oregon in 1848, gold rush experiences, the Penitente Brotherhood near Ft. Union New Mexico, and more. The first edition shows some darkening to the fore-edges of both covers and a small spot on back cover. The inside hinges are just beginning to show some cracking, but still solid and tight. The second edition shows some very light rubbing, else a bright, attractive copy. The second edition has a signed presentation by Fry on the front free-endpaper. An uncommon set of this very scarce work on various Indian Wars in the West. Both volumes protected in a custom slipcase with Title, Author, and Years of Publication in gilt on leather labels on spine, and raised bands.
