About This Item
Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press. VG wraps. 1941. 1st thus. paperback. 8vo . unpp . Unpaged introduction ONLY by Steele's son Percy, apparently an offprint from a 250 page book Princeton did of Steele's works. Percy MacKaye was a playwright, poet, and educator of the first half of the 20th century. He was an integral part of the Cornish Arts Colony in New Hampshire, which coalesced around the sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens at the turn of the century. While it would be hard to pinpoint the notables that MacKaye hobnobbed with, the Colony in various years included the likes of artists Maxfield Parrish, Frederic Remington, Everett Shinn, and Daniel Chester French. Other 'names' who spent time there include dancer Isadora Duncan, actresses Ethel Barrymore and Marie Dressler, even the editor Max Perkins. One of his plays produced there included two of Woodrow Wilson's daughters, with Wilson in attendance. He had several talented children, and was the son of the 19th century actor Steele MacKaye, and the brother of conservationist Benton MacKaye, who was instrumental in the inception of the Appalachian Trail. .
