Several of these poems had been earlier printed in magazines and newspapers, reprinted here with permission. A lifetime of diverse interests and intellectual pursuits is evident in Holden's poetry. His last decades were spent with spouse Barbara in Newport NH, where together they created the Sarah Josepha Hale Award, now in more than 50 years honoring annually a writer of importance for New England. Native to Newport, Hale became editor of Godey's Lady's Book, a widely circulated publication during the 19th century.
