About This Item
Yale University Press/ Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art/ Australian Academy of the Humanities , 1985. Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Signed. Two volumes (complete). Please note that the ISBN quoted is for Volume 1. The reference number and price are for both books. Two most pleasing books. Inscribed - and signed - by Bernard Smith to Frank Bradlow (the Africana specialist and bibliophile) on the title page of Volume I. The dustjackets of both books have wear about the edges, some very slight scuffing. The boards are elegant, handsome, very healthy. Volume I: 'The Voyage of the Endeavour 1768-1771 - with a Descriptive Catalogue of all the known original drawings of peoples, places, artefacts and events and the original engravings associated with them'. Included: a tearsheet from the TLS with a review of the books, plus a pullout from Pacific Islands Monthly, 'The Functions of Art on Captain Cook's Voyages'. The very early pages have some very few smears of foxing. Otherwise, the contents are very smart, very clean, very clear, most generous. Volume II: 'The Voyage of the Resolution and Adventure 1772-1775 - with a Descriptive Catalogue of all known original drawings and paintings of people, places, artefacts and events and original engravings associated with the Voyage'. ISBN: 0300034512. The front pastedown has an ex-libris plate for Frank Bradlow. The top corners of the pages have small, shallow shelving creases. The very early pages have some very light smears of foxing. The pages are otherwise very clean, very clear, most generous, luxe and bountiful - as if barely handled throughout. Please note that due to the weight of the set, should the books need be posted to the outside of South Africa, extra postal charges may be required. fk.
