The Maréchal de Puységur, son of the well-known military author and general, distinguished himself during the French campaign in Spain and the Low Countries under Kings Louis XIV and XV. His work is drawn not only from personal experience but also from a broad reading of ancient and modern writers on military matters. Illustrating the text are forty-one fine engraved plates, including plans, diagrams of battle formations, and several large folding maps. One of the more unusual plates depicts the carefully calculated sleeping arrangement of nine soldiers in a small tent. The work was originally published at Paris in 1748 in folio; another Paris edition, in quarto, appeared in 1749. Brunet IV 989n. Cohen-De Ricci 830n. Graesse V 514n. Not in Spaulding & Karpinski..
