About This Item

Ishiguro, Kazuo. An Artist of the Floating World. First Edition. Faber and Faber. London. 1986. Hardcover with dust jacket. 9 X 5.5 (22.5 X 14). [2]; half-title; publisher page; dedication; chapter setting; pp.7-206; [2]. Near fine copy in an excellent dust jacket.

An Artist of the Floating World is set in Japan following the vents of World War II, told by a painter. Masuji Ono, who in his advanced age, is reflecting on his life and the actions of his past and consequences. The work is considered a mix of historical fiction and global literature. Readers follow Ono, an unreliable narrator, who struggles with family dynamics and expectations, both as a child and as a father, himself. His love of art was a point of contention with his own father, and his pursuit of a career as an artist led him to creating propaganda artwork for the Japanese government. Going from a praised artist during the war, to a pariah afterward has thrown Ono's life into conflict.

Synopsis

An Artist of the Floating World (1986) is a novel by British-Japanese author Kazuo Ishiguro. It is set in post-World War II Japan and is narrated by Masuji Ono, an aging painter, who looks back on his life and how he has lived it. He notices how his once great reputation has faltered since the war and how attitudes towards him and his paintings have changed. The chief conflict deals with Ono's need to accept responsibility for his past actions.
