About This Item

New London: Printed and sold by T. Green, 1769. [24]pp., including a woodcut on the third page. Stitched. A small stain on the first page. Large missing piece, approximately 2 x 3 inches, on the second page, affecting approximately ten words and part of the woodcut on the third page and eighteen lines of text on the fourth page. Tear extends 1.5 inches toward gutter from middle of page. A fair copy. One of several editions of Ames' popular almanac for 1770. Dr. Nathaniel Ames started his highly regarded almanac in 1726, and it was continued by his son after he died in 1764, running until the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Ames was a successful doctor, ardent Anti-Federalist and local politician. The woodcut is an image of the anatomy of a man as it relates to the twelve astrological signs. Includes an essay on silk-farming and an essay on the importance and necessity of a school for medicine with a reference to a Pennsylvanian hospital and its training program. DRAKE 261. EVANS 11147. ESTC W22520.
