This very rare memoir by Charles Blanchot was aide-de-camp to General Bazaine, Supreme Commander of French Forces in Mexico during Mexico's Second Empire. There is so much in here that has never seen light in either Spanish or English, for instance: the powerful if behind-the-scenes role of Doña Juliana de Gómez Pedraza, widow of Manuel Gómez Pedraza, and the vicious if, as Blanchot suggests, unfounded rumors circulating in Mexico City about Bazaine in 1866-7. Blanchot, who married an American of French origin in Mexico City, also offers a detailed and lively portrait of Mexico City society at the…

London: Day & Son Limited, [1866]. First edition, folio, v, [1, blank], 117, [1, blank],pp., chromolithographed title-page (small unobtrusive blind-stamp at head), 25 coloured lithograph plates all mounted on card as issued within gilt borders, captions and imprints below, some occasional foxing, red half morocco, marbled paper sides, spine tooled in gold. Russell's book is perhaps the most spectacular work on the Atlantic Cable, with lithographs from original drawings made by Robert Dudley on the Great Eastern cable laying voyage. A fine de-luxe copy of this beautifully produced record, culminating in the first voyage using the S.S. 'Great Eastern' in 1865. The present work was issued in two forms: the regular issue with tinted plates and the present de luxe issue on large paper with the plates hand-coloured and mounted.

Halifax: Printed by Abraham Hodge, 1799. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Good. 8vo. 502, (18) pages. Hardcover bound in original full leather. The binding is worn and scuffed but sound. Some of the scuffing on the binding has deep gouges, especially on the rear cover where a strip of leather is missing along the fore edge. Hinges are secure, but there is a strip of old cloth book tape on the front inner hinge, and some of the last few leaves of the index are stuck together at the gutter. This does not really affect the text but there might have been some adhesive applied there. Corners bumped. Contains the front and rear blank flyleaves. There is an early ink signature on the front pastedown which appears to be "L. Silliman" (possibly Levi Silliman? 1797-1867. He was the second Bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in North Carolina). "L. Silliman" also is written in light pencil on the rear pastedown, next to an early ink notation of "Haywood." There also a couple of bolder early 20th…

1714 Joutel Journal Voyage MEXICO La Salle Texas Expedition Indians MississippiThe BEST account of the La Salle's Texas Expedition!
Henri Joutel was an important 17th-century French explorer who is best remembered for his involvement in the final American expedition of Rene de La Salle. The Texas Expedition of Sla Salle began in 1684 when he and crew left France to establish a colony on the Gulf of Mexico. The voyage is one of the most important European voyages in search of the Mississippi River – a voyage the ended in mutiny and the death of La Salle. The established colony was a failure after being overtaken by Karankawa Indians.
According to Howes,
"Most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle's two-years wanderings in Texas."
