London 1671, Johnson. Contemporary calf, six raised bands, gold-stamped spine & decorations, 723p., 38 copper-engraved plates, 32 double-page,65 engraved text plates,2 double-page engraved maps, clean & solid copy.RARE FIRST ENGLISH EDITION *** *** *** . . . A GRAND, EARLY ENGRAVED FOLIO IN ENGLISH . . . THE FIRST BRITISH EMBASSY TO CHINA 1671 . . . A MOST SUPERB FOLIO WITH PROFUSE COPPER-ETCHED PLATES . . *** SUBTITLE continued: "...And East Tartary. With a Relation of the Netherlanders Afsifting the Tartar againft Coxinga, and the Chinefe Fleet, who till then were Mafters of the Sea. And a more exact geographical defcription of than formerly, both of the whole Empire of China in general, and in particular of every of the fifteen provinces. Collected out of their feveral writings and journals, by Arnoldus Montanus. Englifh'd, and adorn'd with above a hundred feveral sculptures, by John Ogilby, Efq; Mafter of His Majesty's Revels in the Kingdom of Ireland." . *** TWO TITLE PAGES: This stunning work has two title pages: . The first is a pictorial copper-etched engraved half title: "THE SECOND & THIRD EMBASSIE TO THE EMPIRE OF TAYSING OR CHINA WITH PREVILEDGE 1670." . This engraving shows the Emperor of China upon his throne, with several family members and other people around him. Below him is a graphic scene showing two opposers hand-cuffed to a small boat as they succomb to the waves. A guard stands at the ready with his spiked ball and chain. . The second title pages is full letter-press printed in red and black-ink, showing the full details of title, subtitle and imprint. . *** WRITTEN IN 17TH CENTURY "OLD ENGLISH": The title page and text is written in period 'Olde English,' where 'f' is commonly written for 's,' a standard feature of 17th century continental books, stating: "Englifh'd, and Adorn'd with above a hundred Feveral [sic] Sculptures..." . * by John Ogilby [1600-1676]." Therefore Ogilby translated the original work from Dutch into English and was also the illustrator. . *** CONTROVERSIAL AUTHORSHIP: Since the date of publication in 1671, there has been some confusion about the exact author, because this information was omitted from the title page. . Arnoldus MONTANUS [1625?-1683], is cited on the title page as the person who "Collected out of their several writings and journals." In today's palance he becomes the 'compiler & editor,' according to the AACR [Anglo-American Cataloging Rules], which we learned in Library School. . This title was first published in Dutch, by the true author: Olfert DAPPER [ca.1635-1690], under the title: "GEDENKWAERDIG BEDRYF DER NEDERLANDSCHE OOST-INDISCHE MAETSCHAPPYE OP DE KUSTE EN IN HET KEIZERRIJK VAN TAISING OF SINA," Amsterdam, 1670, published by Jacob van Meurs. . *** BINDING: This folio is 27 x 42 cm. It is bound in full calf, preserving the original gold-stamped decorated covers. The spine consists of six raised bands and seven compartments: five black, two red, all gold-stamped with large decorations. There are two red label stateing "OGILBY'S CHINA," below which is the second red label stating "Vol. II." . This is volume two of an identically bound work labeled as volumme 1 by John Nieuhoff: AN EMBASSY FROM THE EAST-INDIA COMPANY OF THE UNITED PROVINCES, TO THE GRAND TARTAR CHAM EMPEROR OF CHINA, DELIVERED BY THEIR ELCELLCIES PETER DE GOYER, AND JACOB DE KEYZER, AT HIS IMPERIAL CITY OF PEKING. London, 1669. Please see our number: 880748 on our website or check with us for availability of volume 1. . *** There is a nicely etched period armorial bookplate inside the front cover. . *** COPPER ENGRAVED ETCHED PLATES: The work consists of a total of 151 engravings: 31 full page + 2 double-page maps; 6 single full page plates; 55 each half-page plates, one each oone-quarter page plate, including a single-full page engraved half-title. . There is some of the usual 'toning' to some plates including the frontispiece, some foxing to the title-page, discoloration here and there, complete with all plates and maps as issued. . *** CONDITION: This book is nearly 350 years old, as can be expected with any work of this age, there are always the normal and usual minor scuffing, minor wear to the corners & edges. The work was professionally re-backed perhaps more than a 100 years ago, preserving the original spine. The book is firmly bound and very solid. There are a couple of mended page corners and a few tiny closed tears which were expertly ended in the distant past. The work is clean, solid and firm. By and large an excellent copy of a very rare book. . *** APPROPRIATE SHIPPING COSTS: This is a large, heavy and valuable work. At our option, it will be shipped by Fedex, with appropriate packing, signature required & insurance. . *** BIBLIOGRAPHY: Wing M2484 * Cordier, H.: BIBLIOTHECA SINICA: * WorldCat: http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=kw%3Achinensis+au%3Ajohn+og ilby&qt=advanced&dblist=638 . *** .
