About This Item

London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green. 1825. Early edition (first published in 1822). Early edition (first published in 1822). Original publisher's red half morocco with spine ruled in gilt and printed title label to the upper board. Complete with 21 hand-coloured double-page maps, including one folding map of the world, all on mounted guards and dated 1824. A very good copy, the binding secure with a little cracking to the front hinge, rubbing to the boards and spine, minor loss to the corners, and some faint contemporary ink numbers to the rear board. The contents with a contemporary previous owner's ink inscription to the head of the title page, some offsetting from the maps, a split to the central fold at the foot of the folding map of the world (not affecting the map itself), a small tear to the edge of the map of England as well as a minor ink mark and some small pencil drawings of trees to the head, and the occasional ink mark to the margins/rear of some maps, are otherwise in good order. There is also a rather fun contemporary pencil drawing of George IV to the rear pastedown. An attractive, unsophisticated example. A charming Georgian children's atlas with wonderful hand-coloured maps by the well-known engraver and cartographer Sidney Hall, including a fold-out map of the world, various maps of Europe, as well as maps of Asia, 'Hindoostan', Africa, North America, the United States, South America and the West Indies. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
