The book tells the story about difficulties of two Estonan immigrants in US in the late 1920s. Being affected an impact of unemployment himself, author's own experience became the basis for the story. The protagostist Jaan Kirves leaves Estonia for the USA in 1924. Had been interested in educational science, later his interest turned more to sports. But with those skills he was able to find only occasional jobs such as carpets flapping, participation in boxing fights, there he had met his compatriot. Together they had come to the idea to try out for circus artists, which succeeded and brought them money. However, they money attracted a woman scammer, and they сould have lost all. But the story had a patriotic happy ending – they returned to Estonia with hard earned money and with the awaraness of the importance of homeland.

Peeter Aleksander Speek (1873 – 1968) was an Estonian journalist, politician and public figure. He was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Party of Estona in 1905. However, in the end of 1905 Speek fled to Swiss and in 1908 moved to the USA, where he stayed for the rest of his life. Over ten years worked as a clerk in the Library of Congress.

Beautiful illustration on the book cover and six amazing full-page graphic drawings inside created by Estonian painter and illustrator Paul Müller (1895 – 1970). In 1926 Müller moved to New York, where he worked as an illustrator for the Encyclopedia Britannica.
