Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1955. [History] FIRST EDITION. Small Quarto (25 x 19cm), pp.206. Publisher's air force blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and RAF wings motif in blind to upper board, top edge blue. Cream dust jacket featuring black and mauve titles, priced at 17/6. Some minor spotting, a few marks to covers, jacket gently toned to the spine. Very good indeed. Lawrence's 'The Mint' is a memoir of his experiences as an ordinary aircraftman in the Royal Air Force; working from a notebook he kept while enlisted under the assumed name of John Ross, Lawrence wrote of the daily lives of fellow servicemen and about his feelings towards the RAF. During this period he participated in the development of rescue motorboats for downed aircraft. The book, with its sparse and sharp prose, is stylistically very different from 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom', and was published posthumously, edited by his brother Prof. A.W. Lawrence.

Complete with appendices and index. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt titles to spine, gilt scimitars and motto motif to upper board, top edge brown, others untrimmed. Contents clean without the usual spotting, page edges fresh, no inscriptions, cloth with a few light rubs and marks. Near fine, without the jacket. 'Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph' is the autobiographical account of the experiences of T.E. A Limited Edition of 2,000 copies, in quarter blue morocco over blue cloth, corners, edges rubbed. Spine, gilt titles. Internally, limitation/half title, [2], [2], 3-206 pp, t.e.g., remainder uncut, blue marbled endpapers. (257*194 mm). (O'Brien, P.M.T.E. Lawrence,; A172/A173). The Mint is a book written by T. E. It describes his time in the Royal Air Force, working, despite having held senior rank in the army (colonel), as an ordinary aircraftman, under an assumed name, 352087 Ross. The book is notable, despite flaws noted by critics, for its sharp observation, for the insight it gives into Lawrence himself, and for the censorship issues around its publication.
